Something almost beyond comprehension is happening to a girl on this street, in this house and a man has been sent for as a last resort......

This man is The Exorcist

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people who have supported me over the past 15 months and have been fundamental in the progress of this site. First of all, this site would not exist without the encouragement and praise of Mark Kermode, thanks Mark. Also, special thanks are aimed at William Peter Blatty for putting up with me for the past 6 months and without whom The Exorcist would not exist and again this site would not exist. These people also deserve a thanks for their support, Graham Miles, Damon Ayres, Jason Reffell, Gemma Coward, Andy Revell, Craig Lapper, Kim Pateman and the wonderful folk at Big Screen teletext who have allowed me to preach The Exorcist on their letters page for the past year.

Thank you

 Paul

JUNE 30th 2000 00.01am:- Just a note that I have revised the introduction with a write up described as 'lovely' by William Peter Blatty. It can be found below, I hope you enjoy it.

JUNE 25th 2000 16.56pm:- I bring news that has me excited beyond belief! I have seen the trailer for The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen and it is superb! Not really any new footage but still enough to wet the appetite! Now, the bad news is that the US censors the MPAA have flat out rejected the trailer on the grounds that it is 'too intense'. William Friedkin has back lashed by stating, "rejecting it on the grounds that it was too intense is like rejecting it on the grounds that its too funny. It makes no sense at all and seems to be contrary to the purpose of the ratings board, which is not to judge content, but simply to issue a rating based on certain material in the shots--nudity, excessive violence or language--and this trailer has none of that." In the mean time you can see the FULL trailer at http://homepage.mac.com/alvarado/.Movies/exorcist.mov and judge for yourself!

JUNE 5th 2000 14.41pm:- The following sections have been added: The Author, The Novel, The Director, The First Cut, The Final Cut and The New Cut. Well on the way to having this baby completed!!! Those who want to contact me a lot quicker can usually find me on the new message board linked on the navigation bar!!!! All you have to do is sign up for free and you have access to many forums including my very own movie section!!!!

INTRODUCTION

To realistically and justifiably sum up my views and emotions after viewing The Exorcist for the first time I would have to say that the experience was (to borrow from the tag line) 'Something beyond comprehension'.
Taking the classic confrontation between good and evil away from a bestial nether land setting and into the modernized confines of suburban Washington DC, The Exorcist is probably one of the most plausible supernatural feature films of all time.
Beyond the graphic depiction of the evil exemplified in the movie is a very strong and poignant connotation. Be it the importance of Religion in our path of life, the existence of supernatural beings in the world or probing further into the context; the obliteration of the American dream.
To say that The Exorcist is a horror film out to give the audience a cheap scare is pure idiocy. Each and everyone of those who saw the movie over a quarter of a century ago walked out of the theatre and learned a bit about themselves... they learned to better themselves! Unfortunately some pressure groups would force feed the media with phony tales of suicides linked to the movie, but when a protestor gets that desperate... its just par for the course!
Having lived in the UK all my life I am aware of the profound affect that The Exorcist had on audiences when released in March 1974, but I know for a fact that whatever reports were made by the press about audience members dying were unbearably blown out of proportion!
In 1974 the media wanted BBFC chief censor Stephen Murphy out of the job! Not only because of passing The Exorcist with a theatrical certificate, but with passing Straw Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango In Paris and other controversial motion pictures that were released almost back to back from 1971 to 1974, causing the media to fight back! Now, there is an up and a downside to this circumstance. First of all had The Exorcist not caused the moral panic it did back in 1974 I do not believe that the popularity of the movie in the UK would be what it is... soaring! And the fact that it did lead to the video ban in 1986, allowing its re-release to entrap a new generation of cinema goers.
Moving all preferred connotations to one side for one moment, it is all important to merit The Exorcist for what it actually is, a superb example of tour de force film making! With a beautifully written screenplay from the evenly stunning novel by William Peter Blatty, director William Friedkin was able to visualize and handcraft the movie scene by scene with the patience and persistence of his perfect cast. The pace and overall build up of the movie illustrates characterization not apparent in your average horror movie.
To conclude The Exorcist experience is something that you will share longevity with... you will question the experience, constantly look back on the experience and eventually recur the experience - like it or not! You never see The Exorcist only once! That's why my friends, it is an experience... 'beyond comprehension.'

What an excellent day for an exorcism!

Welcome to my brand spanking new home page that is my tribute to the fans of the Greatest Movie Ever Made...The Exorcist. For those of you who don't know my name is Paul Davis and I am just one of the UK's most vocal fans of The Exorcist. I first saw the film at the age of nine, at a time when I'd actually already heard of the film through magazines etc. but it wasn't until I saw a documentary called Hollywood Ghost Stories that I'd actually seen excerpts from the film and from that moment I was determined to see this film that had just been outlawed by the Video Recordings Act. It was about 6 months later when I actually saw the film via a video shop that was on the verge of closing down due to all of his video's being confiscated due to the VRA.  My brother rented the movie for me and I must have watched it about eight times that day. It wasn't that I found thefilm scary (all though I must admit it was freaky at the time) but it was more of a magical experience that told me something about myself, religion, good and evil etc... After that day I was back to the Freddy Krueger's and Friday The 13th's that I was oh so fond of in previous years. It wasn't until June 1998 that I fell in love with The Exorcist all over again. On the June 13th I skipped the college party of the year to stay in and watch a BBC documentary called The Fear Of God, which was a 25th anniversary tribute hosted by Dr. Exorcist himself Mark Kermode, the world's no.1 authority on the film.  After seeing the Fear Of God I bought an NTSC copy of the film and bought as many books and magazines referring to the film as possible. By the time I had conducted an extensive research into The Exorcist, it was now time for the film to get it's theatrical re-release in the UK (appropriately released on October 30th). I attended a few screenings that produced different audience reactions each time. The first screening saw people gasping and ducking at the images, the second saw people disgusted by what they had seen and the third saw the entire teenage audience in hysterical laughter. These responses had told me that Mark Kermode was right, it is the greatest movie ever made...  The film had reflected different expectations with each viewing that proves that the movie gives to you what you give to it.  Shortly after this I was contacted by Mark Kermode and we discussed our own interpretations of the film. He also gave me plenty of journalistic guidance so that I could preach The Exorcist through magazines and in future cases TV. My first web-site arrived in November and was a mega hit until it mysteriously disappeared last January!!!!!  A revised page took center stage in March and has run straight through to this page here. I feel proud to be known as an information center for other web-masters, those include Picard's Pad, Bavard's Exorcist Page and the highly impressive Exorcist Directory, and I'm also one with the fans who need information. I turned myself into a one-man pressure group, mailing letters to the BBFC every day to have the film certified for a video classification, and then on the morning of  February 9th, I got the phone call, "The Exorcist has been certified 18 uncut." This is definitely the news of the year for me, and I'll admit I was the first person in the local video shop to rent a copy on April 26th. A release date for the UK video and DVD sell-through is said to be October 11th but this may change so don't build your hopes up.
Since I last updated this site lots has happened in the world of The Exorcist. I reviewed The Exorcist on video for satellite TV a couple of weeks ago in which I interviewed Mark Kermode, yet another 'Exorcist' book dawned upon us, this one written by Bob McCabe called The Exorcist: Out Of The Shadows, of course the video was released on Monday 26th of April and the brilliant In The Grip Of Evil documentary has finally been released on video here in the UK.  Among the new features on the web site are a new and improved Articles section, a section dedicated the work of Mark Kermode and a section coming soon called The Phenom which is a look at the moral panic that The Exorcist caused in the early 70's and how it matched up against other troublesome flicks like Stanley Kubrick's  A Clockwork Orange and Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs. Plus, I'll take you back to January 1989 when I first saw The Exorcist, and discuss what was so special about the film that has scared me for the past nine years. I've also put all you wonderers out of your misery by updating the FAQ. Any queries feel free to E-mail me.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ENTHUSIASM

PAUL
